Day 1: Departure to the Mountains

Islamabad / Lahore → Chilas or Jaglot
Distance: ~450 km | Duration: 10–12 hours | Overnight: Chilas or Jaglot

Your adventure begins as you leave the bustling cities behind and head toward the majestic mountains of Northern Pakistan. Most travelers depart from Islamabad between 6:00–7:00 AM to reach Chilas by evening. If starting from Lahore, an overnight departure ensures a smooth transition into the mountain route by morning. Pickup can be arranged from your home, hotel, airport, or any city in Pakistan.

Soon after departure, you enter the Hazara Motorway — a smooth, scenic expressway that gradually leads you into the hills. Urban landscapes fade into rolling green mountains, and the air begins to feel fresher and cooler.

By mid-morning, you reach Besham for breakfast. Enjoy traditional Pakistani favorites like paratha, omelet, yogurt, and hot tea in a comfortable roadside restaurant. It’s the perfect pause before the terrain becomes more dramatic.

After breakfast, you officially join the legendary Karakoram Highway (KKH), often called the Eighth Wonder of the World. The mighty Indus River runs alongside the road, carving deep gorges through rugged mountains. Ancient rock carvings occasionally appear along the roadside — reminders of the historic Silk Route that once passed through this corridor.

A scenic stop at Sumer Nala Viewpoint offers your first breathtaking panorama of towering cliffs and winding roads below. It’s an excellent photography opportunity and a moment to truly absorb the scale of the mountains.

By late afternoon (around 5:00–6:00 PM), you arrive in Chilas or Jaglot. After hotel check-in, relax and freshen up. Dinner is served at the hotel, offering traditional Pakistani cuisine or continental options. With the mountains surrounding you and cooler air settling in, you rest early — tomorrow promises even greater beauty.

Day 2: The Legendary Karakoram Highway

Chilas → Hunza Valley (Karimabad)
Distance: ~230 km | Duration: 6–8 hours | Overnight: Hunza Valley

Today is one of the most scenic drives in the world.

After breakfast, you depart around 8:00 AM, continuing along the Karakoram Highway as the mountains grow taller and more dramatic.

Your first major stop is the Nanga Parbat Viewpoint. Known as the “Killer Mountain,” Nanga Parbat (8,126m) is the world’s 9th highest peak. Its massive Rupal Face — the highest mountain wall on Earth — rises dramatically into the sky. Tea stalls nearby allow you to enjoy the view while warming up with a cup of chai.

Next, you visit the Three Mountain Ranges Junction Point — a rare geographical site where the Karakoram, Himalayas, and Hindu Kush ranges meet. Standing here, surrounded by towering peaks in every direction, is a truly unique experience.

As you continue north, Rakaposhi (7,788m) dominates the skyline. At the Rakaposhi Viewpoint, you can admire this majestic peak and its glacier-clad slopes. In fruit season, roadside stalls offer fresh apricots, cherries, and apples from Hunza’s fertile terraces.

Lunch is served at a quality roadside restaurant along the highway, offering biryani, karahi, BBQ, and vegetarian options.

By mid-afternoon, the landscape opens into Hunza Valley. Terraced fields climb the mountainsides, and snow-capped peaks frame the horizon. Passing through Gilgit and along the Hunza River, you finally reach Karimabad around 3:00–4:00 PM.

After hotel check-in, you are greeted with panoramic views of Rakaposhi, Ultar Peak, and Ladyfinger Peak. The rest of the evening is free to explore Karimabad Bazaar, shop for handicrafts, or simply relax on a rooftop terrace.

At sunset, the mountains glow pink and golden — one of Hunza’s most unforgettable sights. Dinner offers the chance to try traditional Hunza dishes like chapshuro and local specialties before settling in for the night.

Day 3: Upper Hunza & Khunjerab Pass – The Northern Frontier

Distance: ~160 km round trip | Duration: 10–12 hours | Overnight: Hunza

Today is the grand highlight of the tour — a journey to Khunjerab Pass, the highest paved international border in the world at 4,693 meters.

After an early breakfast, you depart with warm clothing packed, as temperatures at Khunjerab are significantly colder than Hunza.

Optional morning stops include the ancient villages of Ganish and Altit, where narrow stone lanes and traditional architecture reflect centuries of Hunza’s cultural heritage.

As you travel deeper into Upper Hunza, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. In Gulmit, you witness traditional Wakhi culture and stunning glacier views.

Soon you arrive at Passu, home to the iconic Passu Cones (Cathedral Ridge) — sharp, dramatic peaks that are among the most photographed mountains in Pakistan. A short walk toward Passu Glacier allows you to experience ancient ice formations up close.

Continuing north, you pass Batura Glacier — one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions — before entering Khunjerab National Park. Here, wildlife such as Himalayan ibex and marmots may occasionally be spotted across the high-altitude landscape.

Finally, you reach Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 meters (15,397 feet). Massive gates mark the border between Pakistan and China. The air is crisp and thin, the sky deep blue, and snow often blankets the ground even in summer. Standing here feels like being on the roof of the world.

You take photographs at the border marker, explore the wind-swept plateau, and enjoy the sense of achievement that comes from reaching such an extraordinary altitude.

On the return journey, adventure continues.

At Hussaini Suspension Bridge, you can choose to cross one of the region’s most thrilling rope bridges or admire it safely from nearby.

Next comes Attabad Lake — the turquoise jewel of Hunza. Formed in 2010 after a landslide, its brilliant blue waters are now one of the valley’s most famous attractions. Here you can enjoy:

  • Boat rides across crystal-clear water

  • Jet skiing for an adrenaline rush

  • Speed boat tours

  • Zip lining across the lake

  • Relaxing at lakeside cafés with mountain views

As sunset reflects off the turquoise surface, the scenery becomes magical.

By evening (around 7:30–8:00 PM), you return to Karimabad. After dinner, you rest with unforgettable memories of glaciers, borderlands, and towering peaks.

Day 4: Hunza Heritage & Nagar Valley – Cultural Immersion

Distance: ~80 km | Duration: 8–10 hours | Overnight: Minapin (Nagar Valley)

Today blends history, culture, and untouched natural beauty. The morning is dedicated to exploring Hunza’s ancient royal heritage, while the afternoon takes you across the river into the quieter, less-explored Nagar Valley.

After breakfast, you visit Baltit Fort, a 700-year-old former royal residence overlooking Karimabad. Built in traditional Tibetan style, the fort now serves as a museum showcasing royal artifacts, traditional weapons, and centuries-old living quarters. From its rooftop, panoramic views of Hunza Valley and Ultar Glacier are breathtaking.

Next, continue to Altit Fort, the oldest fort in Gilgit-Baltistan (over 1,000 years old). Beautifully restored, it offers insight into early Hunza architecture and lifestyle. Its terraced gardens and historic rooms provide both cultural depth and stunning views of the Hunza River gorge. Enjoy lunch at the Altit Fort café, one of the most scenic dining spots in the valley.

Before heading to Nagar, you may explore Karimabad Bazaar for gemstones, traditional Hunza caps, dried fruits, and apricot oil.

By afternoon, you cross the Hunza River and enter Nagar Valley — more peaceful and authentic than its neighboring Hunza. An optional stop at Hopar Village offers distant glacier views before reaching Minapin, a charming village nestled at the base of Rakaposhi (7,788m).

Minapin is famous for its cherry blossoms in spring and golden autumn colors. With fewer tourists and traditional stone houses, it feels untouched by time. Take a relaxed village walk, visit orchards (in season), and capture stunning Rakaposhi views rising dramatically above the village.

By evening, check into a cozy guesthouse. Dinner features authentic local cuisine, and the night sky — free from light pollution — shines brilliantly above. Accommodation here is simple but clean, focused on authentic mountain living rather than luxury.

Day 5: Naltar Valley & Return to Chilas

Distance: ~280 km | Duration: Full Day | Overnight: Chilas

After breakfast, depart Minapin and drive toward Nomal, the gateway to Naltar Valley. From here, transfer to local 4×4 jeeps for the scenic mountain track into Naltar.

Naltar Valley, sitting at around 3,000 meters, is famous for its three colorful alpine lakes surrounded by pine forests and snow-capped peaks.

The Lower Lake is easily accessible and offers beautiful blue-green waters. A short uphill walk leads to the Upper Lake, the most stunning of the three, with vibrant turquoise tones that change with sunlight. For hiking enthusiasts, the Third Lake (Bashkiri Lake) offers a more secluded trekking experience.

Enjoy lakeside relaxation, photography, short forest walks, or horse riding. The peaceful setting and crisp pine-scented air make Naltar a refreshing contrast to Hunza’s rocky landscapes.

After 3–4 hours in Naltar, descend by jeep to Nomal and continue south along the Karakoram Highway toward Chilas. Familiar mountain views appear from a new perspective as you follow the Indus River once again.

Arrive in Chilas by evening, check into your hotel, enjoy dinner, and rest before the final journey home.

Day 6: Return to Islamabad – Journey Home

Distance: ~450 km | Duration: 10–12 hours

After breakfast, depart Chilas and retrace your scenic route along the Karakoram Highway. The powerful Indus River accompanies you as the dramatic mountain gorges slowly give way to rolling hills and eventually the plains.

In summer (May–October), an optional return via Babusar Pass and Naran Valley offers a completely different landscape of alpine meadows, Lulusar Lake, and forested valleys.

En route, stop for tea and lunch in towns like Besham or Mansehra before continuing toward Islamabad.

By evening (6:00–7:00 PM), you arrive back in Islamabad or your preferred drop-off location. If returning to Lahore, arrival is expected late evening.

Your mountain adventure concludes, but the memories of Hunza’s peaks, turquoise lakes, historic forts, and peaceful villages remain long after the journey ends.
